I-Play To Bring Casual Games To N-Gage Platform

Nokia today revealed that I-play, the mobile entertainment company, will be delivering a line-up of casual games to the N-Gage platform launching this fall. The first two titles to be introduced in 2008 include, World Rally Championship, the official license of the FIA WRC, and Super Mah Jong, an epic tale based on the ancient spiritual game Mah Jong, from the makers of Jewel Quest(TM).

"I-play brings a diverse games portfolio to N-Gage, and we're excited to have them on board," said Gregg Sauter, Director, 3rd Party Publishing, Nokia. I have to admit that the shake-it feature is pretty cool! Sony Ericsson calls it "SensMe" - The easy way to change your tune: just shake your phone. With Shake control activated, press and hold the Walkman key, then flick your wrist. A vibration lets you know that the track has been changed - a new song from your current playlist is selected randomly then played automatically.

I just hope there will be no negative effect on the phone itself after awhile, otherwise..

Shockwave Mini FlashLite Games Soon On Nokia Phones!

MTV Networks has announced plans to release its Shockwave Mini Flash Lite games through Nokia's Content Discoverer application. You know, the one preloaded on various Nokia phones.

More than 20 will be available initially, including original titles such as Downhill Train and Happy Hours, with more games to come based on MTV shows.

The Shockwave Minis aren't new, as such. Over 30 of them are already available in the US on the operator Verizon Wireless, for example, with the likes of games based on SpongeBob SquarePants (pictured) and Pimp My Ride generating more than 1.5 million downloads.

However, as far as we can tell, it's the first time us Europeans will be able to get our thumbs on them. What's more, it's a shot in the arm for Flash Lite gaming, which has been slow to take off despite the Flash Lite player being preloaded on millions of mobiles.

On a related note, this week MTV announced plans to invest $500 million into games on all platforms over the next two years. Mobile is clearly part of that splurge, and besides Flash Lite we expect to see more Java games based on MTV's biggest shows.

If you ask me, that shot looks like it was taken on front of a computer screen. I'm not quite sure if it's authentic or some sort of adobe photoshop masterpiece. If it's real, then I think W930 may be the other phone to be announced..

The first one is said to be another Cyber-shot phone (code named K830), but this time it will be in a slide form factor. Unfortunately, there were no words regarding what the other phone would be.. I'll make a guess - a midrange Walkman phone..?

New Samsung i450 Symbian 3.2 Phone!

Well, well (and another well). It makes me wonder sometimes why other manufacturers such as Samsung were again (AFAIK) the first one to announce (actually leaked info) a Symbian OS 9.3 powered device like i450! Yes, this is the first S60 9.3 smartphone I know to date. I wonder when will Nokia utilize the 9.3 or better yet Symbian 9.5 OS into their phones - "MORE AT ONCE"! =)

Nokia Announces Product Advisory For BL-5C Batteries

Nokia today issued a product advisory for the Nokia-branded BL-5C battery manufactured by Matsushita Battery Industrial Co., Ltd. of Japan between December 2005 and November 2006. This product advisory does not apply to any other Nokia-branded battery.

Nokia has identified that in very rare cases the Nokia-branded BL-5C batteries subject to the product advisory could potentially experience overheating initiated by a short circuit while charging, causing the battery to dislodge. Nokia is working closely with Matsushita and will be cooperating with relevant authorities to investigate this situation.

Nokia has several suppliers for BL-5C batteries who have collectively produced more than 300 million BL-5C batteries. This advisory applies only to the 46 million batteries manufactured by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006, from which there have been approximately 100 incidents of overheating reported globally. No serious injuries or property damage have been reported.

Consumers with a BL-5C battery subject to this advisory should note that all of the approximately 100 incidents have occurred while charging the battery. According to Nokia's knowledge this issue does not affect any other use of the mobile device.

While the occurrences in the BL-5C batteries produced by Matsushita in the time-period specified are very rare, concerned consumers can request a replacement for any BL-5C battery subject to this product advisory.

It is important to note that the BL-5C battery is not used in all Nokia products and that only a portion of the Nokia BL-5C batteries in use are subject to this advisory.

How to identify a BL-5C battery manufactured by Matsushita during the relevant period

In order to determine if a battery is subject to this advisory, it is necessary to remove the battery from the device. A Nokia battery will have "Nokia" and "BL-5C" printed on the front of the battery. On the reverse, the Nokia mark appears at the top and the battery identification number (consisting of 26 characters) is found at the bottom. Consumers should refer to this identification number to determine if their battery is among the batteries manufactured by Matsushita between December 2005 and November 2006. A comparison of that number with those subject to this advisory will determine a consumer's ability to obtain a replacement free of charge.

Consumers should visit the website www.nokia.com/batteryreplacement or contact their local Nokia call center.

Nokia N95 Repackaged?! - 1200 mAh Battery + US 3G

It looks like that Nokia is indeed listening to the rants, complaints and wishes of N95 users and bloggers alike.

First off, the said repackaged N95 will finally come with US 3G + HSDPA under the 850/1900 spectrum! Which only means blazing data speeds of up to 3.6mbps on AT&T's network! For non AT&T subscribers, I guess they'll just have to settle for the slower EDGE data transfers. Though according to the source, the 2100 HSDPA being removed.

Second, Nokia managed to squeezed in a whooping BL-6F 1200 mAh battery!

Third, it will ship with a 1GB microSD inbox! Which is double of that from European released N95s.

Lastly, but one of the best yet you have to hear (drum roll..) from this revamped N95. The mobile diva has this scoop of increased RAM to 128mb! WOW! I just hope that this particular N95 version be available here in Asia! Nokia, hear me please!! How about an info how many free RAM after booting up? Nokia today unveiled the Prism collection, its latest range of mobile phones aimed at style-conscious consumers. The Prism collection consists of the Nokia 7900 Prism and the Nokia 7500 Prism, handsets which combine individual style and state-of-the-art technology. The two mobile models will be available in the third quarter of 2007 with an estimated retail price of EUR 400 for the Nokia 7900 Prism and EUR 210 for the Nokia 7500 Prism, before taxes and subsidies.

Another Mysterious Nokia Phone?!

It seems that Nokia will finally unveil its next music oriented Nseries device this coming August 29 somewhere in London! There's no doubt that this will be N91's successor. If you ask me, the picture resembles the rumored N81 months ago. Just take a look at the keypad layout and you'll know its really N81! This is going to be another kick ass music phone for sure. New Sony Ericsson P990 Firmware

Sony Ericsson definitely made P990 owners happy by releasing a new firmware. AAS reports that the latest firmware labeled as R6E28 is now available for download.

Bugs gone:

3. Pressing Jogdial in while composing SMS displays contact selection (It was there in R5A17 but gone in R6D23)
4. 17MB free RAM after cold boot

Bugs remain:
1. Solid Colour in Activity Menu. Not transparent
2. Sending SMS from DreamConnect3 will display number in the contact field instead of Name
3. Memory leak still happens. From 17MB free, becomes 12MB without any applications running in the background. Checked using SwissManager (Memory Reclaim Level 3).

"Pimp" Your Nokia 3250 & Nokia 5700!

Hi guys! I know and you know that both 3250 and 5700 has this "cool" form factor. I mean when you start to twist the keypad for music or camera many starts paying attention and later on you'll see dudes staring on your phone and probably have read their faces saying - nice phone and stuff. To my surprise, I still hear lots of my friends, colleagues and other fellows (especially while strolling at malls..) commenting - Whoa! What's that, is that a digital camera? Some says - cool, twisting keypad from techie kids even my 3250 is more than 1 year old already! It's kinda like having your budget N90 too (transforming stuff) LOL! I'm quite sure, one of your main reasons you bought a 3250 or 5700 is because of its twisting keypad right? Same answer here bros and gals!

Removing "Invisible" Unwanted Themes

So you got your spanking new S60 9.x powered smartphone and its been a while and you have installed bunch of themes. Then one day, you checked your theme gallery to change a theme or delete unwanted ones, and to your surprise some of 'em are missing! You said, "What the?!" guess what, you have installed a theme not completely compatible with your phone (I believe those themes are originally meant for S60 2.x phones ported wrongly to and not for S60 3.x devices). Hence, you will not be able to remove it the normal way.

So you ask. How do I get rid of it? Here's a step by step guide:


1. Connect your phone to the PC using the data cable

2. Select "Data Transfer" or "Mass Storage" mode (for other phone models, it's the option where the mobile is like a USB)

3. Make sure your PC has been set to "SHOW HIDDEN FILES AND FOLDERS" on (simply click to your My Computer > Tools > Folder Options > View Tab > Show hidden files and folders) and hit OK

4. On the computer go to My Computer > Removable Disk (the memory card) > Private (it's a hidden folder) > 10207114 > Import

5. Now you'll have a number of folders with barbarian names, like "dc60815d47351ce2" and others. Each folder corresponds to one theme.

6. Open each folder and you'll see in the contents 4 files: a settings file, a .mbm file, a .mif file and a .skn file. The 4 files have in their title the theme name. For instance, in my dc60815d47351ce2 folder, i have the following:

Pink_Seaflower_3250.mbm, Pink_Seaflower_3250.mif and Pink_Seaflower_3250.skn which means that the dc60815d47351ce2 folder is the one of the Pink Seaflower theme (by Babi)

7. When u come across a theme that you want to delete, go back to the Import folder and delete the whole theme folder. Like if I want to delete the pink seaflower theme, I would delete the whole dc60815d47351ce2 folder

8. Safely remove your phone (click on the right part of your system tray beside the PC's clock the icon with green arrow)

9. Enjoy your emptied theme gallery :D

I just tried this tip in my 3250 and it works perfectly fine. After disconnecting my phone, I opened my themes gallery and all the themes I deleted were gone!

For other phones, the parent folder "10207114" may be different (perhaps). You just have to find the folder that contains an "Import" sub-folder.

Next-Gen N-Gage Will Launch On 4Q 2007!

The big news is that Digital Chocolate has signed up to make games for N-Gage, and according to O'Driscoll, there are 35 games in development for the platform, although not all will be out when it launches this year.

However, he also said that N-Gage is due to roll out "during Q4" this year. That sounds like a minor slip from its previously announced launch date of September, but hopefully means we'll have N-Gage games in our hands by Christmas.

We should note that he was referring to the European launch, so it's possible that the platform will launch somewhere in September, to iron out any last-minute teething problems.

In terms of strategy, Web 2.0 is clearly a big influence on the platform, in terms of social networking, user-generated content and connectivity. He also talked about what mobile brings to Web 2.0 services, allowing people to access them on the move.

But what does it mean for games, and specifically the new N-Gage stuff? He revealed some stats indicating that gaming is already popular on the company's high-end phones.

Apparently, 85 percent of Series 60 handset owners are playing the preloaded games on their handsets, while 45 percent are playing downloadable games a few times a week. However, when you look at all mobile users, just 5 percent are actually downloading games.

"We need to move to a point where we're creating true mobile games, as opposed to just putting existing games on the mobile," he said. "We know what the barriers are, yet we're not doing a great deal to resolve them."

So, more Nokia research. Apparently there's three different categories of mobile games - solo gamers, social gamers and passive gamers. It's the social gamers that Nokia is focusing on, who want gaming to be "a catalyst for social interaction" (think Web 2.0 again).

Apparently this category includes 22 per cent of mobile users across the world, so it's a decent potential market – and unsurprisingly the target market for the next-gen N-Gage.

O'Driscoll also talked about what's needed to get more people playing mobile games, including "better games at higher prices", a better buying experience, free demos and multiple ways to buy a game, and more connectivity and the ability to share games with friends.

He gave few specifics on new N-Gage games, although he did promise "Xbox 360 quality graphics" in the future on Nokia's Nseries handsets (although bear in mind that's still on a mobile phone sized screen).

O'Driscoll also showed off the N-Gage shopping experience, although this has been reported before – the combination of a mobile portal, an online iTunes-style store, and the ability to try games before you buy them.
