Nokia Patents New Slider Camera Phone That Twists!

Whoa! Just like the first camera focused N90 where we can rotate or twist its camera barrel and hey, this upcoming phone from Nokia comes in a slide form factor at the same time, how cool is that guys and gals! Not only that, judging by the way it looks, the camera flash seems to be hidden under the hood which can be revealed by pulling the body upwards! I suspect a better video recording than N95, xenon flash and at least 3x optical zoom here. More to the point, pay attention on the 8 or 6Mpx etched right below its camera module, hmmm..

WidSets No Longer beta Too!

Espoo, Finland - Nokia today announced that its innovative Internet service called WidSets, launched one year ago, has emerged from Beta to a new service platform. With the new platform WidSets will offer improved usability by localizing mobile clients and improving mobile widget library. WidSets will also bring advertising in as the primary business model. WidSets works on Java enabled handsets from a range of manufacturers and utilizes widgets, so users can have one-click access to real-time online content without needing to use a mobile browser.

"We've been delighted with the feedback we've had from the Beta trials of WidSets," said Jarmo Jokinen, Director of WidSets, Nokia Emerging Business Unit. "During that time, we've had more than 3 million users register for the WidSets service on more than 300 models of mobile device. We've valued the early feedback, which has enabled us to launch a more compelling service for users and content providers."

The new platform offers a dynamic search feature and an improved widget creation tool for quicker, simpler and more personalized options for creating widgets. And now it is really easy: enter the web address, click to select the feed and then you will have a personal widget! Around 90 percent of the current WidSets' content is already user generated, but the WidSets team has recently added many new widgets and made it easier for users to find local and also non-English-language content.

The new Explore feature for finding widgets offers an option to perform a live search, filter through recommended widgets, or go through tags or categories, and download them for use on mobile devices.

WidSets now offers a unique advertising model to commercial customers for providing two-way-interaction between the advertiser and their customers or prospects. A great example is a movie theater widget: the user chooses the city they are looking for and can then see what movies are on, in which theater, and whether there are seats available. A perfect match of benefits for movie going consumers, and the advertiser!

On the WidSets website people can review the widgets and see the latest, most popular or top rated widgets and share those with others. And now this can also be done from the mobile device. One of the latest widgets is for AccuWeather.com, which is expected to rapidly become one of the top ranked widgets in the WidSets library.

The WidSets mobile dashboard can also now be shared. This means that when creating a profile, users may share their own dashboard and widgets with the others, and see what the other "WidSeteers" are using as well as how they look like, thanks to the user images available in dashboards.

Nokia plans to pre-install WidSets in tens of millions of mobile phones during 2008, and enabling service support in tens of different languages. The recently unveiled Nokia 8800 Arte which will start shipping in the fourth quarter of 2007 will be the first handset to offer WidSets to its style-conscious consumers. In addition, users can already get started with WidSets via the Download! folder on all Nokia Nseries and Eseries devices.

Nokia's Full Touchscreen S60 Demo Phone - Only

Wanna see a glimpse of Nokia's probable full touchscreen device based on S60? These are shots taken from their live presentation. Though this particular device (shown here) may not actually hit the shelves, (nevertheless, it looks awesome with its slick design and large screen) but at least we do get an idea on how future Nokia touchscreen devices might look like.. So far, looks great!

"Ovi" Nokia's New Internet Services Brand Name

Nokia today introduced Ovi, the company's new Internet services brand name. With the introduction of Ovi, Nokia is expanding from a focus on mobile devices to offering a range of Internet services. Ovi, meaning 'door' in Finnish, enables consumers to easily access their existing social network, communities and content, as well as acting as a gateway to Nokia services.

As part of Ovi, Nokia announced the Nokia Music Store and N-Gage, two services that make it easy for people to discover, try and buy music and games from a blockbuster range of artists and publishers, including exclusive content only available through Nokia. Also under the Ovi umbrella is Nokia Maps, a navigation service that offers maps, city guides and more directly to compatible mobile devices. Nokia aims to bring more Internet based services to Ovi in the coming months.

Industry leaders join forces to bring Web services to Nokia devices

Mysterious Nseries Device

Had enough of rumors? Guess what, here's another one from Nokia. Is this the successor of N800 internet tablet or some kind of communicator device or if I may say - Nokia's "communicator tablet" hybrid device!? Perhaps this may be the patent Nokia have recently applied for, ya know the one with removable keyboard, though the pics on that particular patent looks bigger than the one below.. nah, I may be wrong, forget it. On the othe side, this may be the much anticipated N99 too! Anyway, check it out, it's quite cool!

Nokia N95 Music Edition?!

Is this Nokia's plan to counter Steve Jobs' iPhone? It seems that Nokia is cooking something to stop iPhone's sales before it reaches sky-high worldwide as it becomes more available. Rumor has it that this updated version will have an onboard 8GB internal memory and will run on S60 3rd Ed FP1 minus the GPS chip. As with other ME phones from the Nseries family, N95me might end up in black too!

Nokia 6120 Classic Reviewed

After reviewing Nokia 5700 last June, Krisse of All About Symbian now offers another great and detailed review, but this time for 6120 classic. Tagged by Nokia as the lightest and smallest amongst its smartphone portfolio, 6120 classic (which is actually the same as the recently announced 6121 classic except for support for different WCDMA bands and higher capacity battery plus of course, color options) is a Quadband GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and Dualband 3G WCDMA and UMTS (2100 and 850) HSDPA phone equipped with a 2.0" 16M QVGA screen, 2Mpix camera with flash capable of recording 320 x 240 (QVGA) videos @ 15 fps, bluetooth stereo support and 2.5mm audio jack (also compatible with Nokia's 3.5mm jack adapter) and uses the new mini usb port for synchronizing your files to PC and the best part is, its running on a 369mhz CPU with the latest (currently available) S60 OS version, 9.2 (a.k.a. S60 3.1; S60 FP1)!

As far as I know, I think this is Nokia's lowest launch price for a S60 device and I guess this will be one of their best sellers for this year, just consider the ratio of its price and features and you'll know.. The price - 260 euros before subsidies or taxes. Very affordable (IMHO)

Final words from Krisse from All About Symbian:

While other smartphones show off loudly about their technological prowess, the 6120 Classic has quietly appeared on the market without too much fanfare. However, it is the 6120 Classic which is the most likely candidate so far to take smartphones even further into the mainstream. The 6120 Classic's combination of small size, relatively low price and tasteful-but-neutral looks make it a much easier sell to the average person than an N95, E90 or iPhone.

The actual S60 technology is also now mature enough to attract ordinary users: the speed of the interface is generally as fast as on a normal phone, the settings menus have all been unified under a single menu icon, and there's an extensive range of animated how-tos which can be accessed from the Tutorial icon on the main menu. The S60 platform is now very stable, this reviewer didn't experience a single crash with the 6120 Classic.

The 6120 Classic seems to also be aimed at the tech fan who's always wanted a S60 smartphone but was put off by the size, the price or the menu speed. It deals with all of these fairly well, and still has the stuff that existing fans of S60 would appreciate. The 6120 Classic has most of the features of the Nokia N95 for example, but costs less than half the price, weighs 25% less, and is 25% smaller.

The catch is that people with bad eyesight or large fingers may have problems with the 6120 Classic's smaller screen and smaller buttons, and they might be better off with a physically larger phone, especially a clamshell model.

Overall, the Nokia 6120 Classic offers an alternative for people who are unimpressed by large expensive smartphones and want something closer to the size and price of a normal phone. It takes us a step closer to the point at which smartphones and normal phones are one and the same thing.

ZDNet Reviews Nokia 5700

The latest XpressMusic phone was finally reviewed by CNET! Currently, Nokia 5700 is one of my choices (aside from N95) to replace my 14 month old 3250. My main reasons...

1) It has the latest Symbian OS version S60 3.1 (a.k.a. Symbian 9.2) currently available in the market

2) 2.2" TFT 16 million QVGA screen

3) 3G connectivity

4) 369mhz CPU clock speed with 64mb SDRAM (approx. 18mb free executable)

5) LED flash and QVGA video capture @ 15 fps

6) Better music player than 3250 with support for album art and audio visualizations

7) Standard connectors/media card (like miniUSB, microSD, 2.5mm jack)

8) Bluetooth stereo support (AdvancedAudio2DistributionProfile)

9) Flash support in the latest open source S60 browser

10) And finally, the price I just love it! Considering all the features (plus upgraded hardware), it's even more affordable than my 3250 (initial release prices)!

Only thing missing (at least for me), an auto-focusing lens! Nokia, I'am patiently waiting for your announcement of an express music phone (targeted at mid-range customers like me) with at least 3mpx sensor with AF!

Nokia 5700 Xpress Music

It's no secret that we're big fans of the Nokia 5300 Xpress Music. In fact, we loved it so much when we reviewed it last year that we gave it a CNET Editors' Choice award. So you can imagine we were a bit excited when the new Nokia 5700 Xpress Music landed in our office. As the update to the 5300, the 5700 offers everything found on its predecessor but with a new design twist--literally--and improved features. On the performance side, calling and music quality shine, but photo quality was disappointing. At the time of the writing, no U.S. carrier has picked up the 5700 so it remains a bit pricey at $400. And unfortunately, because the 5700 supports only the WCDMA band used in Europe, it's unlikely it will land here in its present form.


Design

Instead of incorporating the 5300's slider design the Nokia 5700 Xpress Music offers a twisting base like that on the Nokia 3250. The keypad, camera lens, and dedicated music controls are located on different sides and each base position is used for a different function. With the keypad facing forward, you can make calls as normal and access all menu applications. Picture time? That's no problem. Just turn the base 90 degrees and the shooter kicks into gear instantly. A turn to the left activates the camera's normal mode, while a turn to the right lets you take self-portraits. Or if you're pining for some tunes, just rotate the base a full 180 degrees to the right to start the music player.


Nokia 5700 Xpress Music

The 5700's 2.2-inch (320x240 pixels) display supports a brilliant 16 million colors. Vibrant and bright, it's great for viewing everything from text to graphics, and it's quite suitable as the viewfinder for the camera. The menus are user-friendly and attractive, and we love that Nokia provides a description of unfamiliar applications if you hold the cursor over the corresponding icon. You can change the font size, the backlight time, and the brightness. Our only complaint is that the display attracts fingerprints and smudges.


Nokia 5700 Xpress Music

The Nokia 5700 Xpress Music has dedicated music player controls.

Below the display are the spacious and tactile navigation controls. A five-way joystick doubles as a shortcut to four-user defined functions, but it was a little tricky to use. In the "up" direction, we kept selecting things by accident rather than moving the cursor. There are also two soft keys, which are programmable for one-touch access, and the Talk and End buttons. Menu access is through a dedicated button to the left of the array while a clear key sits to the right. Both are covered in a tactile, rubbery skin. Similarly, the large keypad buttons are raised above the surface of the phone so we had no problems dialing by feel. The backlighting was rather dim, though, and the text on the keys may be too small for some users to read easily.
